Considerations

Firing an employee can be a difficult task to assume. Before you fire an employee, make sure you have made these considerations. Make sure you have thought things through carefully. Understand the valid reasons for when an employee can be fired in your state. Remember you cannot retaliate against employees for filing safety complaints, wage complaints, workers’ compensation claims or for reporting illegal activities.

Also, do not let your personal judgments on race, gender or religion cloud your judgment, as you could face a serious lawsuit. Make sure you keep copies of all negative reports or warnings that have been issued to the employee. In addition, if you are considering firing an employee, keep the information confidential and arrange for any necessary parties to be present at the meeting.
